"Monday, Monday, so good to me. Monday morning, it was all I hoped it would be...

Monday, Monday, can't trust that day. Monday, Monday, sometimes it just turns out that way..."

Walking Sticks, and more...

"In 1731, after decades of collecting, Seba commissioned illustrations of each and every specimen and arranged the publication of a four-volume catalog detailing his entire collection-from strange and exotic plants to snakes, frogs, crocodiles, shellfish, corals insects, butterflies and more, as well as fantastic beasts, such as a hydra and a dragon.

Seba's scenic illustrations, often mixing plants and animals in a single plate, were unusual even for the time. Many of the stranger and more peculiar creatures from Seba's collection, some of which are now extinct, were as curious to those in Seba's day as they are to us now. "

Sea organisms,
from the beautiful Cabinet of Natural Curiosities.

"Albertus Seba’s Cabinet of Natural Curiosities is one of the 18th century’s greatest natural history achievements and remains one of the most prized natural history books of all time.Though it was common for men of his profession to collect natural specimens for research purposes, Amsterdam based pharmacist Albertus Seba (1665–1736) had a passion that led him far beyond the call of duty. His amazing, unprecedented collection of animals, plants and insects from all around the world gained international fame during his lifetime."

leaving you, not really belonging to either, not so hopelessly dark as that house that is silent, not so unswervingly given to the eternal as that thing that turns to a star each night and climbs-

...one moment your life is a stone in you, and the next, a star.

eight years ago, on september 11th, i received a phone call from my brother, mark. he was at a convention in London, frantic because he did not have access to a television. "are we being attacked? i heard they hit the pentagon! what the hell is going on?"

he asked me to call a stranger, the mother of a business associate. she lived near DC, and i called to relay her son's message: "please call me, i can't get through to you". i understood that panicky feeling because i had been unable to reach my son, paolo, who had just arrived in Rome for the school year.

this woman had the calmest voice i'd heard all morning, and during our exchange, she talked about her yoga classes. she recommended a "yoga convention" in february, and i nearly screamed: "february, will we even make it to february?!"

i now practice yoga.
